AI web development agency: you pay for real time spent

SPARCLEY is an AI web development agency that bills only the active, clock-measured time spent working with AI agents – and shows every job in a project report.

What does billing for real working time mean?

SPARCLEY is an AI web development agency in London, and we have automated a large part of our internal processes. Our team works alongside AI agents for coding, testing, research, content and quality checks, and clients are billed for the active working time measured by the clock – not for hour estimates carried over from the days when the same task was done by hand.

It is for businesses that commission websites, online stores, integrations or ongoing support and want two things: work delivered faster, and a bill they can check job by job.

02

Why legacy hour estimates no longer fit the work

Agency quotes have traditionally been an hourly rate multiplied by an estimate. That estimate comes from how long a task took when every line of code, every test and every product description was written manually, plus a buffer for the unknown.

With AI agents in the workflow, a component can be drafted, a test suite written or a migration script prepared in a single working session rather than across several days. If an agency keeps quoting the old estimate, the client pays for hours that never happened. So we measure what the work actually took and bill that.

03

Where do AI agents work in our process?

AI agents handle the parts of a project that are repeatable, clearly specified or easy to verify. A person directs every job: they write the prompt, give the agent the right context and check the result.

  • Coding: components, templates and modules, refactoring and data migrations for WordPress, WooCommerce, OpenCart 3 and Next.js.
  • Testing: automated tests and checks of forms, checkout steps and layouts at different screen sizes.
  • Research: platform documentation, API specifications and option comparisons, summarised before a decision is made.
  • Content: first drafts of product descriptions, metadata and translations, reviewed by an editor.
  • QA: checks for broken links, missing metadata, slow pages and accessibility issues before and after each release.
  • Internal operations: project setup, deployments, time reports and routine monitoring run as automated workflows.
04

How is AI working time measured?

We do not estimate the time, and we do not reconstruct it at the end of the month. Every AI job is timed by the clock, and the rules are simple:

  • Time at the PC runs from a prompt, through the answer being written, until the next prompt.
  • Idle gaps longer than 20 minutes are not counted at all.
  • Only the active operator part is billed: writing prompts, reading and checking the results. The rest of the time at the PC is not billed.
  • Hours are billed at the rate in force on the day the work was done.
05

What does a real time report show?

Each client project gets a full report: every job, the AI's answer, its screenshots and the time behind it. This is the transparent real-cost breakdown – you can check any line of the invoice against the work it paid for.

Because the next prompt closes each job, the time a person spends reading and deciding is measured, not guessed. One of our reports covers four projects between 10 August and 22 October 2026 – 2,383 AI jobs in total, of which 2,053 were closed by the next prompt inside the 20-minute window:

  • Time at the PC: 29 days 5 hours (about 701 hours).
  • Billed operator time: 16 days 13 hours (about 397 hours).
  • Difference: about 43% less than paying for every minute at the PC, whatever the hourly rate.

What stays human at an AI web development agency?

AI speeds up execution. It does not replace judgement or responsibility, and it does not sign anything off. Its output is treated as a draft: every change goes into version control, is tested on a staging or preview copy – navigation, search, checkout, forms and emails – and reaches a live site only with approval. After release we check the live pages again.

These parts of every project stay with people:

  • Strategy: your business, your customers and what the project must achieve.
  • Design decisions: layout, brand, user journeys and the trade-offs between them.
  • Architecture: platforms, integrations and how data flows between systems.
  • Review: every AI-generated change is read and approved by a developer before it is merged.
  • QA sign-off: a person checks the work against the brief before anything goes live.
  • Accountability: you deal with a named team member, not with a tool.
07

How is client data kept secure and confidential?

Speed is not worth a data leak. These rules apply to every team member working with AI on client projects:

  • Least access: we ask only for the access a task needs, and you can revoke it as soon as the work is finished.
  • No credentials in prompts: passwords, API keys and payment details are never pasted into AI tools.
  • Minimal personal data: customer records go to AI tools only when a task requires it and you have agreed; where possible we use staging copies or anonymised samples.
  • Your requirements: if your contract sets specific terms for how AI providers may handle your data, ask us before the project starts and we will confirm what applies.
  • UK GDPR: we handle personal data under UK GDPR. If your brief is confidential, tell us before you send it and we will agree how it is shared.

How do I request a quote for AI-assisted work?

Send us a short brief through the contact form: what you need, which platform you use or are considering, any deadlines and a budget range if you have one. Links to your current site or designs help.

We reply with an estimate for the work. Once you approve it, every AI job is measured as described above, billed at the rate in force on the day it was done and listed in your project report. If you have a fixed budget, say so in the brief and we will plan the scope around it.

Need ongoing support? Ask us how time reporting applies to a monthly maintenance plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is AI-assisted web development cheaper?

It often is. In one of our reports covering four projects, billed operator time was about 43% lower than the total time at the PC. We do not promise a fixed saving, because it depends on the work.

What exactly am I billed for?

Only active operator time, measured by the clock: writing prompts and reading and checking the AI's results. Idle gaps over 20 minutes are not counted, and hours are billed at the rate in force on the day the work was done.

What will I see in the project report?

Every AI job on your project, the answer it produced, its screenshots and the time behind it, so each billed hour can be traced to real work.

Does a person review AI-generated code?

Yes. Every change is reviewed by a developer, tested on a staging or preview copy and approved before it goes live.

Will my data be shared with AI tools?

Only what a task needs. Passwords, API keys and payment details are never entered into AI tools, and customer personal data is shared only when required and agreed with you. If you need specific contractual terms, ask us before the project starts.

How do I get a quote?

Send a short brief with your platform, goals and timeline through the contact form. We reply with an estimate, and once work starts every billed hour is backed by the project report.
