Who is our OpenCart development service for?
Our OpenCart development service is for owners of OpenCart stores in the UK who need a developer for a specific job, from a single module to a full upgrade. You can hire our OpenCart developers for one task or for a longer piece of work, and every job starts with a review of your store.
- Your store needs a feature that neither OpenCart nor the Marketplace offers, so it needs a custom module or extension.
- Your store runs OpenCart 3 and you are deciding whether to move to OpenCart 4.
- Your store uses the Journal theme, and new features have to fit it.
- You are planning a new online shop – our eCommerce web design for a new store covers that.
- You import products from suppliers – see supplier product import for OpenCart and WooCommerce.
What our OpenCart development services include
Our OpenCart development services cover custom modules and extensions, themes built from a Figma design, work on stores that use the Journal theme, and upgrades from OpenCart 3 to OpenCart 4.
Custom OpenCart module and extension development
When no existing extension does what your store needs, we build a module or extension for it. We do the same for our own products: four modules of ours are published on the OpenCart Marketplace and listed in the table below.
OpenCart theme development from a Figma design
We turn every page of a unique Figma design into semantic, responsive HTML, CSS and JavaScript and compare it with the design at 1440, 1024, 768 and 390 px, checking the widths in between as well.
A purpose-built converter, not hand coding, then turns that HTML into an OpenCart 3.0.3.3 theme, so when the designer updates the design, the changes are applied again without repeating the work. A developer reviews and finishes the result.
The theme installs through the OpenCart admin and the OpenCart core files are not modified, so future OpenCart and extension updates stay safe.
Journal theme for OpenCart
If your store uses the Journal theme, we check how a new feature fits the theme before we quote it. Our Product Video module, $39 on the OpenCart Marketplace, is built for OpenCart stores running the Journal3 theme.
OpenCart 3 to 4 upgrades
Before we quote an upgrade from OpenCart 3 to OpenCart 4, we check whether each installed extension and your theme has an OpenCart 4 version.
| Module | What it does | Price (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| Supplier Import | Imports supplier products and keeps prices and stock in sync | $69 |
| DPD Tracking | Tracks parcels for stores shipping with DPD in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia | $98 |
| Universal XML Feed | Exports XML product feeds from your OpenCart catalogue | $59 |
| Product Video | Shows product videos on stores running the Journal3 theme | $39 |
Module prices are in US dollars, as listed on the OpenCart Marketplace. Read more in our guides to the OpenCart DPD tracking module, the OpenCart XML feed generator and the OpenCart product video module for Journal3; Supplier Import is covered on our supplier product import page.
How much does OpenCart development cost?
OpenCart development is quoted per project after we review your store, while our ready-made OpenCart modules cost from $39 to $98 on the OpenCart Marketplace.
The price of custom work depends on your OpenCart version, your theme, the extensions already installed and the work you need, so we do not give a fixed price before we have seen the store.
Projects are paid in three stages: 30% upfront when development begins, 40% when development is complete and testing starts, and 30% on approval and handover.
New stores and themes we build come with a 12-month guarantee; for smaller jobs, the quote states the terms.
Send us your store URL and a short description of the work through our contact page, and we will reply within 24 business hours.

Start development
Development starts with the 30% upfront payment.
Test the work
When development is complete, 40% is due and you test the finished work.
Approve the handover
The final 30% is due on approval and handover, and the quote states the guarantee for the work.
Which OpenCart versions and platforms do we work with?
We build on WordPress, WooCommerce, OpenCart, PrestaShop and Laravel.
Our OpenCart themes from a Figma design are built for OpenCart 3.0.3.3, and stores moving to OpenCart 4 start with the compatibility check described below.
Should you upgrade from OpenCart 3 to OpenCart 4?
An OpenCart 3 to 4 upgrade moves a store to the OpenCart 4 code base, which needs PHP 8.0 or later and OpenCart 4 versions of its extensions and theme.
Whether you should upgrade depends mostly on whether every extension and the theme your store relies on has an OpenCart 4 version. Both branches still receive releases: according to the OpenCart releases on GitHub, OpenCart 3.0.5.1 and OpenCart 4.1.0.4 were both published on 11 August 2026.
The OpenCart upgrade documentation sets out these steps:
- Back up the database, the files and the extension settings.
- Check that every extension and the theme has an OpenCart 4 version.
- Confirm that the server runs PHP 8.0 or later.
- Test the upgrade on a staging copy of the store first.
- Run the upgrade, then test the storefront, admin, extensions, payment and shipping methods.
We check your extensions and theme before we quote an upgrade, so you know what has an OpenCart 4 version before any work starts.
OpenCart development FAQ
How much does OpenCart development cost?
OpenCart development is quoted per project after we review your store, because the price depends on the OpenCart version, the theme, the extensions already installed and the work needed. Our own OpenCart modules cost $39 (Product Video), $59 (Universal XML Feed), $69 (Supplier Import) and $98 (DPD Tracking) on the OpenCart Marketplace. Projects are paid 30% upfront, 40% when development is complete and 30% on approval and handover.
How long does an OpenCart project take?
The timeline for an OpenCart project is set in your quote, because adding one module and building a whole store take very different amounts of time. We respond to every enquiry within 24 business hours, Monday–Friday, 09:00–18:00.
Is OpenCart still good?
Yes, OpenCart is still a good choice for shops that want a free, open-source platform installed on their own hosting. Both the OpenCart 3 and OpenCart 4 branches received new releases on 11 August 2026 (3.0.5.1 and 4.1.0.4). Whether it suits your store depends mostly on whether the extensions and theme you rely on exist for your OpenCart version.
Can you upgrade my store from OpenCart 3 to OpenCart 4?
Yes. Before quoting, we check whether each installed extension and your theme has an OpenCart 4 version, because, as the OpenCart documentation notes, OpenCart 4 needs PHP 8.0 or later and extensions and themes that are compatible with OpenCart 4.
Do you work on stores that use the Journal theme?
Yes. Our Product Video module, $39 on the OpenCart Marketplace, is built for OpenCart stores running the Journal3 theme, and before quoting we check how any new feature fits your theme.
Can you build a custom OpenCart module or extension?
Yes. When no existing extension does what your store needs, we build one, and four modules of our own – for DPD tracking, supplier import, XML feeds and product video – are published on the OpenCart Marketplace. Custom work is quoted per project.
